How did South Sydney try and arrest the problematic form slump that’s seen the Bunnies slip from being equal first on the NRL ladder after 11 rounds to winning only three out of their last 10 games?

Souths coach Jason Demetriou tried to lighten the mood by engaging in a round of basketball at the club’s Heffron Park training base on Tuesday.

But there’s a view too much of the soft touch approach might explain why the Rabbitohs have completely fallen off the cliff in the back half of the season.

Much has been made of all the Rabbitohs injuries in terms of the red and green middle forward rotation but what’s been lost is it was a similar story at the start of the season but South Sydney were still good enough to beat Penrith, Brisbane and Melbourne in consecutive weeks.

The Bunnies attack will never be an issue when Cody Walker, Latrell Mitchell, Alex Johnston, Damien Cook, Keaon Koloamatangi and Campbell Graham are in the side.

But as the Fox Sports Lab illustrates it’s defensively where South Sydney have completely unravelled over the course of the last three months.

During the opening 11 rounds of the competition South Sydney were conceding only 13.6 points per game.

Yet in the 12 games since it’s been a horror show as opposition sides have picked them apart with ease to concede more than double at an average of 28.6 points per game.

Any good NRL coach will tell you there’s no way you can win an NRL premiership leaking more than between 14 and 18 points per game on average.

Back-to-back premiers Penrith are averaging only 12.1 points per game this season.

We still think South Sydney has the talent to be able to make a late run at September.

But it needs to start by tightening up the red and green defence this weekend against St George Illawarra in Cairns.

Guess who was the only NRL club chief executive to be a no show at the NSW Rugby League and Queensland Rugby League powwow at the Blues Centre of Excellence at Sydney Olympic Park on Monday?

Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy made the 2000km round trip from Brisbane, QRL CEO Ben Ikin was the same, Warriors CEO Cameron George was on a Zoom link from Auckland, the same for North Queensland CEO Jeff Reibel from Townsville, Canberra CEO Don Furner drove the six-hour round trip from the national capital, the Melbourne CEO made the trip, you get the general idea.

Panthers boss Brian Fletcher, South Sydney CEO Blake Solly, 16 of the 17 NRL club CEO’s all made the effort to listen to Ikin and NSW Blues CEO Dave Trodden outline their pitch for why the state leagues need millions more in funding from the NRL to propagate the grassroots level of the game.

The only CEO who failed to attend was Tales from Tiger Town star Justin Pascoe. Yep, the Wests Tigers CEO sent his apologies due to a prior commitment.

Instead it was left to the Wests Tigers chief financial officer to Zoom into the meeting.

For the record it’s 8.2km from the Wests Tigers Centre of Excellence in Concord to the NSW Centre of Excellence at Sydney Olympic Park.

Is it any wonder the Wests Tigers are in the queue to collect back-to-back wooden spoons?

STILL at the NRL club CEO’s meeting with the State Leagues we loved this anecdote about the straight shooting Panthers Group CEO Brian Fletcher.

After QRL chief executive Ben Ikin had presented an impressive pitch about why the Queensland State League needs an additional $10 million in funding and Blues boss Dave Trodden had outlined why NSW need an additional $5 million, Fletcher had one simple question.

Part of Ikin’s pitch included the detail of how the QRL boss had a meeting with NRL CEO Andrew Abdo and the NRL’s chief financial officers on Tuesday this week.

The Panthers boss then asked: “Is Peter V’landys going to the meeting tomorrow or is it just Andrew Abdo and the accountants?”

Ikin responded it was Abdo and the accountants.

Fletcher then deadpanned: “You’re wasting your time then.” We love the Panthers chief’s direct appraisal.

MANLY boss Tony Mestrov has hit out at suggestions the Sea Eagles need to shift players on because the club will be over the salary cap next year.

The Sea Eagles chief is adamant Manly are cap compliant for 2024 with the club only looking to value add in terms of its roster management.

Sea Eagles skipper Daly Cherry-Evans drops down to a tick under $1 million next season while the departure of the Fainu brothers – Latu and Samuela – to the Wests Tigers also saves Manly $800,000 in the cap next season.

The northern peninsula club is also aware of the Wests Tigers circling backrower Haumole Olakau’atu but the Sea Eagles remain adamant the strike edge backrower will remain part of the Manly set-up for next season and beyond.

Olakau’atu was upgraded this season with the Sea Eagles plan to try and extend him beyond his current contract until the end of 2025 at the end of this season.

With the salary cap tipped to increase to around the $14 million mark in total next year the only reason Manly will be looking to move players on is because they don’t fit into the Sea Eagles plans.
